Joint appointments held in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering.

Research program is in engineering decision-making for environmentally conscious design and manufacturing. New methods are developed for rigorous analysis of multiple objectives under uncertainty during the engineering design process. Conflicting objectives include manufacturing cost, product performance, quality and environmental impacts.

TEACHING

  • TMGT 461/BA 461 Integrated Project - faculty advisor for industrially sponsored student project teams for the Hoeft Technology and Management Program. Projects vary widely, but all address strategic issues related to technology management. Student teams include both business and engineering students. Sponsors include Motorola, Boeing, Eaton, Kimberly- Clark, State Farm and John Deere.
  • GE 494 Senior Capstone Design –faculty advisor for industrially sponsored senior design teams. This is a Department-wide effort, with each faculty member advising one team of three students, and serving as evaluator for several others. Projects cover a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines, including manufacturing plant wastewater and air pollution control systems, product development, dynamics and control, inventory control, etc.
  • GE 530 Multiattribute Utility Analysis for Decision-Making - graduate level course in normative decision theory for engineering design. Emphasis is on multiattribute utility theory, decision problem formulation, current research via technical journal readings and class projects.
  • IE 310/GE 330 Operations Research Methods – undergraduate introduction to deterministic operations research and engineering economy, covering time value of money and linear, integer, dynamic and non-linear programming.
  • IE 300/GE 331 Analytical Methods for Uncertainty – undergraduate introduction to statistical analysis, covering discrete and continuous random variables, sampling, estimation, tests of hypotheses and linear regression.
