L. Daniel Metz

Professor Emeritus

L. Daniel Metz, Ph.D., professor of general engineering, joined the faculty in 1970 after employment with Ford Motor Company. His B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are in mechanical engineering.

At Ford, Metz was a product development engineer, working in design and experimental development of brake and suspension components and transmission shift linkages. His current research interests include simulation of driver/automobile dynamic behavior, human control performance and vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics. He is active as a technical consultant in accident analysis and reconstruction and vehicle dynamics, and has published more than 50 technical papers and one textbook. He consults for the United States Auto Club, the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, insurance companies, manufacturers and attorneys, and is technical advisor to USAC for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. He also offers nationally recognized seminars on Automobile Vehicle Dynamics for the Society of Automotive Engineers.

In 1971, Metz received the first University of Illinois Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence, in 1972 the SAE Teetor Award, and in 1976 the inaugural Urbana-Champaign Campus Award for excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. In 1981, he was inaugural recipient of the Gamma Epsilon Award for Teaching Excellence and in 1987 he was the inaugural winner of the College of Engineering Outstanding Advisor Award.

He is a registered professional engineer in Illinois and is a senior member of IEEE. He reviews papers for IEEE, ASME, SAE and Applied Mechanics Reviews, among others.
