Scott A. Burns, Ph.D., P.E., has been a faculty member in the Department since 1985, after receiving his Ph.D. in civil engineering at UIUC.
His primary research interests are in numerical methods, engineering
design optimization, and structural engineering. He is a registered
professional engineer in the state of Illinois.
Prof. Burns teaches the introduction to engineering course, GE 100,
to all incoming students in the Department, and the engineering design
optimization course, GE 413, which is a design elective. He is also
active in the Discovery Program, offered campus-wide through the Provost's
office, for which he teaches an introductory course in mechatronics.
He was awarded the Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence in 1990, the
Department's Gamma Epsilon Excellence in Teaching Award in 1989, 1990,
1992, and 1998, and named on the College of Engineering's list for Advising
Excellence in 1996.
Prof. Burns is a recipient of a NSF Presidential Young Investigator
Award in 1989 and was named a Fellow in the Center for Advanced Study
at UIUC in 1992. He received the State-of-the-Art in Civil Engineering
Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1998, and again
in 2004.
He chaired the ASCE Technical Committee for Optimal Structural
Design 1991-1994, and was an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal
of Structural Engineering
